At FLITE, we are pioneering innovative surface engineering techniques that promise to reshape the world. Our cutting-edge solutions aim to create safer products, enhance environmental sustainability, and open the door to incredible future designs.
FLITE offers chemical-free deicing solutions for safer and eco-friendly operations.
FLITE provides eco-friendly maritime solutions for sustainable ocean operations.
Team members from IT, medical, aviation, oil and gas, water industry, and manufacturing.
Traditional coatings are costly, toxic, and high-maintenance.
Some industries can't use coatings, needing constant material replacement.
We shifted careers to focus on this transformative technology.
Our vision is a future where modern products coexist with nature, preserving clean air, water, and soil, and where durable products benefit all humanity.
FLITE’s mission is to make products that are safer and more resilient while reducing or eliminating chemical coatings and toxic manufacturing methods.
Our method is technology transfer to find brilliant science in labs around the world, and bring it to commercial utility and industrial scale.
Dan Cohen, CTO of several startups, encountered unsolvable surface problems in fields from medical devices to solar structures. Seeking solutions, he discovered laser surface functionalization at the University of Rochester, introduced by Professor Chunlei Guo. This advanced technology, offering benefits like superhydrophobic metals and hydrophilic polymers, had yet to reach the market despite significant research investment.
To commercialize it, Dan founded FLITE Material Sciences, forging a partnership with the university. Over five years, FLITE has introduced this non-chemical protective technology to over 100 customers and collaborated with other research institutions to tackle industrial issues like rust, icing, and fouling with innovative material science solutions.
At FLITE, we make industrial surfaces stronger, more durable, and environmentally friendly using cutting-edge technologies. Instead of relying on toxic chemical coatings, we use clean lasers and advanced processes to protect materials from damage caused by things like ice, corrosion, and bacteria. Our solutions help industries like aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, and marine extend the life of their equipment while reducing maintenance costs and environmental impact. In simple terms, we’re making the future of industrial materials safer, stronger, and more sustainable.
FLITE Material Sciences specializes in transferring scientific discoveries from university labs to the commercial sector. While universities focus on research, publication, and student engagement, they often lack the resources and motivation to commercialize their inventions. State and research funds heavily invest in discovery, but taking those inventions to market is a different challenge.
FLITE bridges this gap by identifying promising technologies and collaborating with university tech transfer offices and inventors. We take the risky steps of scaling and proving these inventions for industrial applications. We are proud partners with the University of Rochester and the University of Nebraska, and we are expanding our collaborations with institutions in Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands, and Taiwan.
